Here's a few quick sneaks of the piece I have done for Jon Burgerman's show Fast Food opening at Sergeant Paper in Paris on the 28th January. I have worked with Jon a lot in the past (look here) but it's been a while since our last collaboration and it was nice to be working with him again as he's a tip top guy. "The Lovers, The Dreamers, and Me", the Jim Henson tribute show opens today in Gallery Nucleus, Alhambra. We are so pleased to be part of this show and wish we could be there to see what all the other great artists involved have done. I have sneaked some photos of this piece previously and Jonathan posted the concept artwork over on his blog this morning but its time for a full reveal and i just hope you like it and it was worth the wait. Although made predominately as a sculptural piece, it is also a working puppet and I will post the video of him in action at a later date. Artist, poet, novelist and "nocturnal romantic". Edwin's band, The Decadent Prosimians, split acrimoniously after differences arising over styling mousse in 2005. Since the split Edwin has concentrated on his literary career and can often be found in his local graveyard communing with restless spirits and the old lady who walks her Yorkshire terrier past his favourite bench every morning. He enjoys necromancy, scrabble and tinned aubergines intended for the harvest festival.

Edwin is 45inches standing and 26inches seated. He was part of the Sneaky Raccoon Halloween show at Kid Robot, and can be bought here All proceeds from the sale of Edwin will got to charity.

A Selection of framed beetle now in my shop.

Finally got round to putting these up in my shop. One of a series of framed, pinned bugs. I have a love/hate relationship with insects. Even though they're usually my favourite section of any natural history museum or zoo they're also my biggest fear when traveling. Thankfully, in Japan I only had a few encounters with insects (mostly notably a Mukade!). It seems strange that I would avoid parks for fear of bugs but would actively seek them out in the many pet shops that sell them.

Felt Mistress x Ben Newman

I few weeks ago I posted some sneak peeks of the work I was doing with Ben Newman. Well the show opened last Thursday (runs till the 11th November) so I can now reveal the full images. It was a great pleasure to work with Ben his work is beautiful and he is a thoroughly nice chap. His show "Masks" is at Nobrow in London (who are also very nice chaps)As well as Ben's amazing prints on display, he has collaborated with other artists, I made three large Yokai from Ben's book Bento Bestiary. He also collaborated with Sahar Freemantle on some miniature millinery and his dad Colin on some 3d wooden masks ( they are so good). You so need to check out this show, as well as the work on display Nobrow also publish some great books by some brilliant artists so be warned you may leave there with a lighter pocket! Many thanks to Ben for getting me involved and to Nobrow who I have worked with a few times previously and it's always a pleasure.

Arla Milk

Another belated blog post, this time about the Arla Milk project i worked on with Jonathan earlier this summer. It's a set of posters for Swedish dairy company, Arla. The project was art directed by the brilliant Jakob Westman (take a look at Jakob's work!) for the Swedish ad agency Karnhüset with photography by Daniel Lundkvist. The press release is below with some work-in-progress shots and some of Jonathan's original concept artwork.

This August a new set of milkbar posters will be released by (Swedish dairy company) Arla featuring characters from British Felt Mistress (Louise Evans & Jonathan Edwards).

Jakob Westman, Art Director at Swedish ad agency Kärnhuset says:
"I've known about Jonathan and Louise's work for a few years and have always been on the lookout for an excuse good enough to get to work with them. And the Arla poster series seemed like the perfect match! I'm a big fan of illustration, and that's how we approached this. Or like illustration deluxe. There's been a healthy interest in crafts and textures in graphic design and illustration the last few years, and a big boom in retro-photography with apps like Hipstamatic and Camera+. We wanted a surreal (but non-retro) look and we were very keen on having the handmade look come through.
I get such a kick from seeing the textures and the wires, to see that it's NOT 3d-generated, and that there are a bunch of imperfections in there. I also get a kick from the scale of it, that we were able to work with actual props. The candles on the cake are actually burning, the balloons on the ground are real and the clasps on the farmer's dungarees are actual full-scale clasps. That's something you don't get with CGI or traditional illustration and it brings a whole other level to the final poster and makes it so much fun to look at."

The posters are displayed on milk dispensers (milkbars) in Swedish schools and lunch restaurants. Since the posters are on display for 4–6 months one of the requirements have been to come up with designs that lend themselves to new discoveries on the nth viewing. This was also the reason that Kärnhuset turned to German eBoy and their sprawling cityscapes for the first sets of posters, followed by fun and elaborate illustrations from British TADO.

The project with Felt Mistress started with a brief from the agency with a description of what they thought could take place in the two posters. They also pushed for the characters to not be too cute or cartoony, but to be more monster-ish in their appearance. Something Felt Mistress was more than happy to comply with. The agency also requested a very trippy and non-literal color-scheme.

After discussing with Louise how the characters should look Jonathan then made a first round of sketches which were approved after a few very minor tweaks. "Yeah, it worked out really well." He says. "We tried to push the weird colors and make the characters a bit out there. Something that comes pretty natural for us [chuckle]. This is also the first time the felt characters have been used as illustration and not as expensive toys in a hipster flat or office. I've always thought of what we're doing as illustration. That they'd be able to tell stories in editorial or advertising contexts."

Once the illustrations were approved by the client, Louise cut patterns, picked out fabrics and started stitching it all together. "The cow took some thinking to work out." Louise says. "They wanted her to look good both on her feet and sitting down. And Jonathan had cheated a bit and not thought about the mechanics. Fortunately we were able to make a setup with a hook that allowed for the cow's head to be re-arranged. Also it's always important to me when making clothed characters, like the farmer, to use actual clothing fabrics rather than felt – I used denim and checked cotton for the farmer's dungarees and a shirt with real buttons and fastenings. I think it's details like this that really bring a character to life."

The finished characters (11 in total) were then shipped to Stockholm where the whole set – including flat cut-outs of clouds, trees and buildings – was built up and photographed by Daniel Lundkvist.

"It was also great to see what the photography was able to add" says Jakob. "The photos I'd seen previously of Felt Mistress' characters had been more documentary and I think we were able to make them a bit surreal and trippy while still having the handmade qualities show. It's been really rewarding to see how everyone involved have taken something already great and made it even better".

This is a really delayed blogpost that I should have done months ago. Earlier this year (May/June) I was lucky enough to spend 5 weeks in Japan along with my lovely Jonathan. We were invited to do a residency at Headspace Gallery in Nara and also headline the annual Headspace Art and Music Festival in Osaka. During our time in Japan we had so much fun and met so many great people. Jamie and Aiko from Headspace were fantastic hosts and made us feel so welcome. They had arranged lots of interesting things for us to do during our stay, including tea picking and also introduced us to other Japanese artists with whom we collaborated with as part of the festival. We were based in Nara for the most part often travelling to Osaka and Kyoto but for 10 days we were invited to stay up at the Kayamori house which is up in the mountains in Sakurai. This had amazing views and wildlife (including terrifying Mukade) we could hear wild boars crunching the bamboo behind the house. I could keep typing but I think the photographs will say it all and let you know what an amazing time we had.

Felt Mistress x Ben Newman - Taimatsu Maru

I was asked by the talented Mr Ben Newman if I would like to collaborate on some pieces for his upcoming show at Nobrow in September. I have done 3 pieces in total all of which appear in his book Bento Bestiary (which I highly recommend) some bits of which I have already posted sneak peeks but here's a bit more for you as a taster. It's going to be a great show, Ben has worked hard to produce some fantastic new pieces, he has also collaborated with his dad on some amazing wooden masks and also the milliner Sahar Freemantle. I will be going to the opening night of the show (see poster below for details) so pop along and say hello, it's going to be a good night :)

I was pleased to be asked by Inkygoodness to be part of their Character Totem exhibition for Pictoplasma in Berlin. It stands approx 4ft tall and each piece is individual and then stacks together. I have always loved Totems and have even considered trying to carve one from wood (my dad is a brilliant woodcarver so I'm sure he would have helped) The Christmas before last Jonathan bought me a great book on Totem carving and as it was too cold to spend hours in my dads workshop making a complete mess and probably nearly losing a few fingers I decided to make some felt ones, I was never really pleased with them but now I have worked on the big totem I feel I can share the poor first attempts.

I say first attempts but I had played around with the idea of Totems when I worked with Inkygoodness for their Wonderland exhibition. We call these pieces Voodoo Tron (helpfully named by a friend from Flickr) they were a mix of totems, Aztec and African sculptures and masks with a little bit of Tron mixed in for good measure. Sadly General Dombolo (the little guy with the arms and legs) was stolen from the gallery during the show, I often wonder what happened to him. I just hope he is loved.

Introducing The Furry Mayhem...

The Furry Mayhem consists of Flink Strothers (Lead guitar, vocals), Groobo Tubbs (Bass guitar, backing vocals) and Thrubb (Drums, backing howls, grunts). The Furry Mayhem are widely considered to be the true progenitors of the Furry Metal genre. They formed in the early noughties after meeting at the legendary rock club "The Sock Drawer" (it was originally called "The Rock Store" but due a mishap involving the poor handwriting of the owner and a myopic signwriter the name stuck) and were soon signed to FM Records. Their debut album "We Are The Furry Mayhem" made them household names all over the world and even their roadie, Wilko Roby, has become a celebrity in his own right. Flink is married to leading model Elspeth Frond, Groobo has opened his own chain of crazy golf courses and Thrubb was recently a contestant in the popular TV series "I'm A Celebrity.." (but was sadly disqualified after eating three hammocks, two trees and one of the cameras).

They're currently on tour in their customised amp/winnebago/chest of drawers. Catch them at a venue near you soon!

Work done for "Tales from the Sock Drawer" group show at the 20-21 Gallery Visual Arts Centre, Scunthorpe from Nov 13 - Jan 2011 and then touring starting with York In Jan - April, more details soon.

I was asked to decorate one of the new blank Malibu bottles and this is the result. He sits nicely over the bottle He hasn't got a name, all I know is that he's been stranded on an island drinking Malibu for many years. Let's have a little competition. I'll will give him away (without the Malibu inside!) to whoever comes up with the best name for him. Get your thinking caps and leave your suggestions in the comments. Lady Gaarrgghhh Garrgghhhh rose to prominence in the infamous monster clubs situated in the labyrinthine network of tunnels beneath New York city.

Inspired by previous glamonster icons such a David Growlie and Furry Mercury, Gaarrgghhh Garrgghhhh has taken the monster world by storm with a combination of killer tunes (literally!), outrageous outfits and an ability to breath fire (during a recent performance she inadvertently toasted the entire front row of her audience!).

Her recent tour of Japan saw her break all previous audience records. The Japanese Yokai community have taken her to their hearts partly due to her Stag Beetle ancestry (she inherits her shiny black antlers from her grandmother's Stag Beetle side of the family).

I've also opened a Big Cartel shop unfortunately there is no plush for sale on there at the moment as I am working towards a big project (hopefully, I'll be able to tell you more next month) and other commissions and exhibitions. However, you can buy the Felt Mistress embroidered patch and the postcard set. I'll be adding to it soon. The characters were based on a screen printed illlustration by French artist, Karine Bernadou, which appears in the latest issue of No Brow. I was honoured to be asked by Jon Knox (Hello, Brute) to collaborate with him on some characters for his solo show "Teen Dream" at Rotofugi in Chicago. I'd been an admirer of Jon's work for a while and felt an affinity with him as someone who also worked on handmade pieces, I also love his attention to detail with regards clothing.If you are not familiar with Jon's work you should be! go check out his website. He's one talented guy.
I produced three characters for the show Dillon, Jeffrey and Pepper, and definitely want to work on more in the future ( we have discussed some great ideas, just need a few more hours in the day!) The show runs until the 25th April if you're in the area go check it out.

Here's a few pics of Brunhilde and Little Geoff, a recent creation.

Brunhilde was privately schooled in a hollowed out tree trunk by
an owl. After leaving the Tree Trunk Academy she spent a
number of years living in Tokyo (specifically Harajuku) working
as an assistant to a prominent Japanese Yokai where she
developed her love for stripey tights, crepe soles and stag beetles.
On returning to her Woodland home she found Little Geoff, her six
legged frug, who she is now never apart from.

Brunhilde stands 105cm tall.

Didn't want you all to think I'd been lazy. I've been busy stitching for the window of Start London. I'll be posting some sneak peeks soon. As well as lot of familiar faces there'll be a lot of new characters too.

This project is doubly exciting because not only is it a really cool job but Brix Smith-Start who co-owns Start and initiated the project is the same Brix Smith who was in The Fall - one of my favourite bands of all time - and a thoroughly lovely lady.

Whilst staying at friend's I was requested to make a tweed cover for a Stratocaster. My friend is in a bluegrass band normally playing a banjo but also wants to play his electric guitar occasionally. He felt it was a bit too rock'n'roll and wanted it to be a bit more "geography teacher". I must add I didn't have my trusty equipment with me so this is the best I could come up with.

Last month I had a request from Dan from Trap 5 after he'd seen the fried egg I made for Mr Burgerman to make another one for him to propose to his girlfriend, Liz, with. It was complete with a ribbon to attach the ring to. I was happy to hear Liz said "yes". Well, who could resist an egg-based proposal. What next? Maybe a felt wedding cake.
